National Lighthouse Day

Join us to celebrate National Lighthouse Day on August 7 from noon to 4 pm!

It was on this day in 1789, that Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys and public piers. Our new nation recognized the importance of keeping mariners safe in their journeys to send and trade goods all over the world. Lighthouses are some of the oldest permanent buildings in the US!

We will have interpreters outside the lighthouse to talk about its history and the growth of the Point since the first lighthouse was built in 1852. In addition there will be corn hole games and in the Beach Pavilion - free popcorn, a free craft bag (make your own lighthouse) for youngsters 6 to 12, and a raffle with some great prizes! Children must be accompanied by an adult to collect the craft bags.

From noon to 4 pm we will have a wonderful variety of baskets and other items on view ready for you to take a chance on. Tickets will be $1 each, 6 for $5, 12 for $10, or 24 doe $20 (cash or credit card).

The raffle will be a "tin can" auction - pop as many tickets as you want in the can in front of your desired prize. At 4 pm, a winning ticket will be plucked out of each of the cans. You do not need to be present to win but will need to pick up your prize in the Tawas area within 30 days or a new winner will be drawn. (Arrangements can be made for a hand-off.)

Please remember that a Recreation Passport is required to enter the state park.
